When people say Jesus' first disciples didn't have theological training, I always wondered what they meant about it.
Many of them may be uneducated, they may not be aware of the jargons, and they may not be familiar with our homiletical structures, but I don't think they didn't have a theological training.
In fact, I honestly think they had the best theological training in the world. They knew Greek more than John MacArthur, they mastered the hermeneutical spiral more than John Osborne, they were practicing apologetics more than Ravi Zacharias, their very words were understood even without our formal homiletical structure, and they knew Jesus and the Holy Spirit, on a very personal, face-to-face, level.
So, please don't use the first disiciples as an excuse for you not to study theology, hermeneutics, homiletics, etc... and "leave" everything to the Holy Spirit.
I'm not saying everyone should go to a seminary. I'm saying we should do our part, all we can to equip ourselves.
The first disciples did their part, and then left the results to God. They 'worked as if everything depends on them, and then prayed as if everything depends on God'.
Theology is not something you just brag about. It is a necessity. When accurate theology is applied, sincere doxology takes place. (When accurate knowledge about God is applied, sincere praises to Him takes place).
